Most youngsters who are just out of college are excited at the thought of getting their first job. The problem is they have just finished their studies and as such do not have any work experience at all, except perhaps a part time job.
Without any experience it is quite difficult to get an executive position right away so most new graduates find themselves having to start from scratch and then try and move up. The reason why it is so difficult is that they have lots competition not only from fellow graduates, but also from other more experienced individuals who have worked in similar jobs in other companies and are just looking for a change.
Fresh graduates do not get too much opportunity to negotiate their terms and conditions. The reason is because of lack of work experience. Whereas another person who is applying for the same job can negotiate for a higher wage because he has enough work experience.
The salary one can expect to get as a fresh graduate depends mainly on what course the individual has graduated in. A survey that was conducted revealed that science graduates had a higher earning potential as compared to liberal arts graduates.
One of the things that could help while negotiating your salary is being aware of your potential. You should never sell yourself short or get bullied into accepting a lower salary. If you pass the interview, the next thing of course is agreeing upon a salary. This is where fresh graduates give in and just accept whatever salary the employer offers.
A good tip is to never bring up the salary subject until after the offer is made. Instead, try to find out indirectly how much another employee in that same position is earning and then negotiate later on.
Instead the prospective employee should inquire about the various responsibilities the job entails and should emphasize how he will be beneficial to the company. This shows the employer that you give the company more importance than salary and that you are truly concerned about the welfare of the company.
Finding out the salaries of people working in similar positions in other companies can also work to your advantage. This way you know whether or not you are being offered a decent wage and are in a better position to negotiate.
However, salary is not the only thing there is about getting a job. Companies also offer their employees other perks and benefits, which could be rather substantial and can make a big difference when deciding whether to take up the job offer or not.
