Clarity is among the most important of all aspects of any diamond. Knowing the method of grading a diamond’s clarity before buying one is essential. Learning to grade a diamond’s clarity is actually rather easy. Two of the basic things you need to understand in this respect are that some diamonds have blemishes and inclusions whereas other diamonds are eye-clean, which indicates that the blemishes or inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. Within these two categories there are further subcategories.

Several people are under the mistaken notion that clarity of a diamond is a reference as to how clear the diamond is. But that is wrong. What clarity refers to, is the presence of external and internal imperfections that could exist in the diamond. The diamonds that have no flaws earn the grade IF or FL- Internally Flawless or Flawless, which indicates that the diamond is perfect. An I-1, I-2 or I-3 grading indicates that there are several imperfections within the diamond. An I-3 is the lowest grading.

VVSI and VVS2 gradings indicate the slightest imperfection, VSI and VS2 indicate a slighter higher imperfection and SI-1 and SI-2 also indicate that the diamond has a slight imperfection, which is higher than the other two.
