In the days of yore, (about twenty years ago) it was considered proper and professional to give two weeks notice before departing one’s place of employment. How times have changed. More and more employees in America are sticking it to the man (a term from those same days of yore) and competing amongst themselves for the title of grandest exit. However, we should at least attempt some level of objectivity, so let’s examine both sides of the coin.

Pros
Most states have a law which uses the at-will terminology. This legally allows employees and employers to sever any business relationships at any period without prior notice. Unless it is specifically stated in your contract otherwise, you do not owe you employer even an hours notice before resigning. This is especially useful when your new employer requires that you start immediately. It is both odd and hypocritical that employers are expecting professional resignation ethics from employees, but have no qualms about stealing personnel from other companies at the blink of an eye. You must also evaluate the working conditions you will receive if you do offer two weeks prior notice. I doubt most employers in America will take you out for a cold one to celebrate. Immediate resignation could save you two weeks of torture and discrimination.

Cons
The term “it’s a small world after all” is a harsh reality in even the largest markets. While Americans tend to be a forgiving sort, we do posses fantastic memories for those who have wronged us in the past. There is absolutely nothing more detrimental to a career than burnt bridges. You many never come in direct contact with your employer again, but indirectly, the chances are a lot higher. A negative background conducted by a potential employer will probably eliminate any chance of you receiving a call back. One should also remember that not all individuals are protected by the at-will employment law. Union members will often be governed by terms from bargaining agreements that will state specific advanced notice before termination of employment. Personal contracts work in much the same way. It would be prudent to carefully examine contracts or other foreign influences that could legally prevent a quick exit.
