Ebay is the worlds largest online auction site. Enabling buyers and sellers to interact in real-time, in the selling and buying of goods. Originally set up as an auction site for collectibles. Ebay called themselves, an online marketplace. It is a powerful online platform for sale of goods.

This rapidly expanded to include the possibility to sell just about anything. And in the year 2000 a man actually put his soul up for sale. The bidding reached 400 dollars before Ebay stopped this ridiculous auction. And in 1999 a human kidney was put up for auction. The bidding soared to 5 million dollars before Ebay pulled the plug. And in 2000 a rare baseball card sold for1.2 million dollars, this was the highest amount made on an Ebay auction at this point in time. So the possibilities are there for making money. It’s up to you to have a go. It’s great fun. And like all these sites, pretty addictive.

Ebay is the biggest online auction site in the world. It has a number of sites ranging across the globe from Ebay India, to UK, US, Germany, Canada and a host of others. To use the site in your area you need to sign up for it. You will also need a current credit or debit card, or bank account details if you want to sell on the site. To buy, you will require a Paypal Account available free of charge at http://www.paypal.co.uk . Paypal offers you some protection as a buyer.

Buying is slightly easier. You simply click to buy and make your bid. If it is highest at the end of the auction time which is shown on screen, you win. You will have chances to increase your bid if you wish. Care is needed when bidding though. Make sure that you have read the item description carefully as some of these can be very deceptive. For example, a friend of mine thought she was buying a bottle of Channel No5 that the seller claimed was an unwanted gift. She won it at £30 and was really pleased but what she had not noticed was that it was only a 5ml sample.

There is also a practise called shilling that raises its head from time to time on this site. This is where a seller, or a group known to that seller deliberately inflates the price of an item that is not attracting many bids.

If you are buying something that is expensive look at the seller’s feedback and try to contact someone else who has previously dealt with them. Although feedback is provided by buyers and sellers this is not always reliable. There was recently a spate of sellers generating good feedback by selling items at 1p (you have to complete a transaction to leave feedback), in order to bump up their reputation.

Summary: Buying and selling on here can be fun but it is full of potential pitfalls.

Once you find your chosen items via a search you can view these items and find out about the seller by reading their feedback. The design of the Ebay site isn’t exactly the best around, but it serves its purpose well. It’s simple, but functional. There’s no banner ads, Java or Flash to slow the site down.

You can either browse for what you want though the hierarchical categories or use the search engine. Browsing is simple, despite the thousands of items for sale, because of the tree-like way items are listed. The search engine is very good too. You can choose to search for items only in your country if you aren’t willing to/can’t send money abroad, you can exclude words from your search which is very useful if the word you search for regularly comes up with irrelevant items. (i.e. searching for the band Ash frequently produces Pokemon related results so the words “pokemon” and “pikachu” can be excluded to get better results).
You can search within a specific category only, which is useful in the music section where you only want CDs for example.

I caught the eBay bug about a month ago, and still I foam at the mouth when I regularly check my buying and selling page.

It doesn’t help when virtually everything you sell, sells, and everything you want entices you to bid higher; there’s no escape!

Like most I was a bit shy of eBay as I was wary about being conned, worried about losing money (sellers fees) for things that didn’t sell etc. but when I saw how much of a frenzy a friend of mine was getting into I thought I’d give it ago - just once. But no one told me that eBay was virtual cocaine.

And if you’re lucky your parted money will see a bargain materialise before you (used or new), or you can make a probable (nee regular) trip to your PO who will know you’re an eBayer, get a jiffy and post away with polite little communication inbetween. If you’re wary of talking to strangers in most cases I’ve experienced no one really talks unless there’s a need to confirm something or make an arrangement. It is nice to swap emails and post with these temporary prey, er customers, er friends.

And then to calm down there’s the message boards…I can’t be bothered writing anymore, I have to check my eBay!

I have been both a buyer and a seller on EBay for some time now and I love it, I mean where else could you find a range of goods from a bag of unused plastic smarty lids from a guy who used to work in the Nestle factory to top quality designer clothing and shoes from Italy? There is still a myth which surrounds EBay that say`s if you want something you will find it cheaper on EBay, this is just not true in all occasions. Although there are undoubtedly loads of bargains to be had you can quite often be taken in by the whole experience and find that once you add postage and packing to your orders they can indeed be found cheaper other places.

EBay is simple to use and very quick and easy to join although a PayPal account is almost a must but again Paypal is also easy to sign up to and once you have your PayPal buying and selling becomes very easy on EBay and about as secure as you can get also. I have used EBay for a large variety of things including designer shoes, an Italian football top for an ex, second hand books for college during my time there and many other things beside. I have never had a problem with anything I have bid for on EBay and my best friends boyfriend has recently just bought a car from a seller on EBay again without issue. I know some people do have horror stories to tell about EBay experiences but I firmly believe if you are careful you will have a good experience on the site.

The site and it`s search engine are very reliable and I have never went to EBay and found the site to be down or running particularly slow which is a good achievement for a site of its size with so many users. Have a browse and prepare to be surprise at what you find!

I started using Ebay a few years ago mostly to buy beenie bears the ty variety, but I quickly realised just how much cheeper you can get some items, its simple to use once you have signed up, I registed to paypal to pay, it cost nothing, I dont buy from anyone with a 98% or less, this is how ebay grades people they get feedback when a transaction has completed, and ebay rates this feedback, its so easy click on buy select catagory, choose what you want to bid on or if you are lucky it will have a buy it now price, confirm to buy or bid, this is a legal contract you are bind by, then pay or wait until the auction finishes, bearing in mind that you can be outbid, however you do get e-mails to confirm the bid, if you are outbid and when the item ends. The only thing is watch what the post and packaging is and where its coming from, some people are very greedy and thats how they get there money.

My tip is watch who you buy from, check the post and packaging price and then enjoy the ebay experiance.

Ebay is the most famous auctioning site online, with sites like ebid paling in comparison. Ebay offers a range of options on how items are sold, you can have traditional auction methods of bidding, or ‘buy it now’, or ‘buy it now or best offer’.

I’ve had some amazing bargains of ebay, but have also heard of some buyers doing some amazingly stupid things! Like one primark dress was sold for at least twice its retail value, even though the listing stated it was from primark.

Feedback ratings allow you to see how reputable a seller is, and you should always be wary of scanners since there are stories of people who think they are buying an XBox, but actually receive a cardboard box with an X written on the side.

As long as you are scam savvy then ebay is a major source of bargains for which i will always be thankful!
